Hormone Therapy for Women
Individualized Care Through Every Stage of Life
Hormonal changes can affect women at different stages of life, particularly during perimenopause and menopause.
Symptoms may include changes in energy, sleep, mood, sexual function, body composition, and overall well-being. Because many of these symptoms can also have other causes, appropriate evaluation is an important first step.
At OTR Health & Wellness, we take an individualized approach to hormone therapy. Our healthcare professionals evaluate your health history, symptoms, laboratory findings when appropriate, treatment goals, potential risks, and other relevant factors before recommending treatment.
Hormone therapy is not appropriate for every woman, and treatment decisions should be individualized.
*In-person care in Cumming, Georgia and Panama City Beach, Florida, with telehealth appointments available to eligible patients in both Georgia and Florida.
Understanding Hormonal Changes
Hormone levels naturally change throughout a woman's life.
During perimenopause and menopause, changes in estrogen, progesterone, and other hormones may contribute to symptoms that affect daily life.
Women may seek evaluation for concerns such as:
Hot flashes or night sweats
Changes in sleep
Changes in energy
Menopause-related mood changes
Changes in sexual function or desire
Vaginal or genitourinary symptoms
Changes in body composition
Other symptoms occurring during the menopausal transition
These symptoms are not always caused by a hormonal imbalance. A healthcare professional can help evaluate your symptoms and discuss whether hormone therapy or another approach may be appropriate.
What Is Bioidentical Hormone Therapy?
The term bioidentical refers to hormones that have a chemical structure identical to hormones produced by the human body.
Bioidentical hormones may be available in FDA-approved prescription products. In certain circumstances, an individualized compounded hormone preparation may also be prescribed when clinically appropriate and permitted by applicable law.
It is important to understand that “bioidentical” does not mean risk-free, more natural, or necessarily safer or more effective than other forms of hormone therapy.
The appropriate medication, formulation, dose, and route of administration depend on the individual patient.
A Personalized Approach to Hormone Therapy
OTR does not use a one-size-fits-all approach to hormone treatment.
Your care may include:
Clinical Evaluation
Your healthcare professional reviews your medical history, symptoms, current medications, treatment goals, and relevant risk factors.
Laboratory Testing
Laboratory testing may be used when clinically appropriate to help evaluate your health or monitor treatment.
Laboratory values are considered alongside your symptoms, health history, and other clinical information rather than in isolation.
Individualized Treatment
If hormone therapy is appropriate, your provider will discuss treatment options based on your individual circumstances.
Treatment may involve FDA-approved hormone products or, in certain circumstances, a patient-specific compounded preparation when clinically appropriate and permitted by applicable law.
Ongoing Monitoring
Hormone therapy requires follow-up and periodic reassessment. Your provider may monitor symptoms, laboratory findings, side effects, treatment response, and other relevant health factors and adjust treatment when appropriate.
Potential Benefits & Treatment Goals
For appropriately selected women, hormone therapy may help manage certain symptoms associated with menopause and hormonal changes.
Treatment goals depend on the individual patient and may include addressing concerns involving:
Hot Flashes & Night Sweats
Hormone therapy may be considered for certain women experiencing bothersome vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause.
Sleep & Energy
Hormonal changes and menopause-related symptoms can affect sleep and energy. Treatment recommendations depend on the underlying causes of these concerns.
Menopause-Related Mood Symptoms
Some women report changes in mood during the menopausal transition. Appropriate treatment depends on the individual and the cause of the symptoms.
Hormone therapy should not be interpreted as a general treatment for depression, anxiety, or other mental-health conditions.
Sexual & Genitourinary Symptoms
Hormonal changes may contribute to changes in sexual function, vaginal comfort, or other genitourinary symptoms. Your healthcare professional can discuss available treatment options based on your specific concerns.
Bone Health
Hormones can play an important role in bone health. Your provider can discuss your individual risk factors and whether hormone therapy or other strategies may be appropriate.
Individual results vary, and hormone therapy does not guarantee improvement in any particular symptom.
What Hormone Therapy Does Not Promise
Hormone therapy should not be viewed as a cure-all or general anti-aging treatment.
OTR does not guarantee that hormone therapy will:
Produce weight loss
Increase immunity or “strengthen” the immune system
Treat depression, anxiety, or other mental-health disorders
Improve hair growth or skin appearance
Improve a relationship or intimate partnership
Increase sexual desire
Restore energy to a particular level
Reverse aging
Prevent chronic disease
Produce a particular physical or emotional outcome
Your healthcare professional can help establish realistic treatment goals based on your individual health and symptoms.
FDA-Approved & Compounded Hormone Medications
Depending on the patient's needs, hormone therapy may involve FDA-approved prescription products.
In certain circumstances, a provider may determine that a patient-specific compounded preparation is clinically appropriate and permitted by applicable law.
Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. The FDA does not review compounded medications for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are marketed.
Compounded medications are not the same as FDA-approved brand-name or generic medications.
The fact that a medication is described as “bioidentical” does not establish that it is safer, more effective, or more appropriate for a particular patient.
Medication selection is an individualized clinical decision.
Is Hormone Therapy Right for Me?
Hormone therapy is not appropriate for everyone.
Your healthcare professional will consider your symptoms, health history, medications, risk factors, potential benefits and risks, and treatment goals before making a recommendation.
Depending on your individual circumstances, additional evaluation or another treatment approach may be appropriate.
Requesting hormone therapy—or a particular hormone, formulation, or dose—does not guarantee that it will be prescribed.

Ongoing Care Matters
Hormone therapy isn't something we believe should simply be prescribed and forgotten.
Ongoing care allows your healthcare professional to evaluate how you are responding to treatment, discuss concerns or side effects, review relevant testing when appropriate, and determine whether your treatment plan should continue or change.
Your treatment needs may evolve over time.
